Phonemic awareness is the ability to recognize and manipulate individual sounds (or phonemes) in spoken words. 

This includes being able to identify the separate sounds in words, blend sounds together to form words, and segment words into individual sounds. 

For example, being able to identify the individual sounds in the word "cat" (c-a-t), blend the sounds together to form the word "cat," or segment the word "cat" into its individual sounds. 

Phonemic awareness is important for reading because it is a critical skill for learning to read and spell. 

It helps students to understand the relationships between sounds and letters in words, which is essential for decoding words accurately and fluently. 

Without phonemic awareness, students may struggle with decoding words and may not be able to read with automaticity or comprehension. 

Phonemic awareness is also a precursor to phonics instruction, which teaches students how to connect sounds to letters and use that knowledge to read and spell words.
